Symbolism of the Egyptian Ankh

Ankh

  • This Egyptian symbol represents eternal life and provides magical protection, also represents the regeneration of life through water.
  • Many other wisdom traditions use this symbol with some variation in the vertical and horizontal cross.
  • Often the loop at the top is used to represent holy water circulating the body.

The Ankh is also known as key of life, the key of the Nile or crux ansata (Latin meaning "cross with a handle"), was the ancient Egyptian hieroglyphic character that read "eternal life". Egyptian gods are often portrayed carrying it by its loop, or bearing one in each hand, arms crossed over their chest.
